Replacing a Spa's Brain: Hot Tub Circuit Boards

Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.

A hot tub or spa circuit board is essentially the electronic brain of the machine. Based on the commands pre-coded into the circuit board as well as the settings determined by the owner's panel on the outside of the tub, the circuit board keeps the spa running correctly. This includes heating, circulation, filtering cycles, and compensating for changes in outside temperature versus that of the internal water.

When the circuit board inside the spa starts to go bad, the signs won't be clear and easy to distinguish. Usually the case starts with one or two control systems beginning to malfunction. A common symptom is the water temperature sensor. It may very well be that the sensor itself is working fine, but the circuit board begins to read the signal wrong. This type of situation can be frustrating, as it usually requires one or two repairs to figure out that the board may actually be at the root of the problem.

A typical repair of the hot tub's brain involves opening up the internals of the hot tub after disconnecting the power source and then disconnecting the circuit board. Once freed, the board is then removed and replaced with a new one. New ones are not cheap, so it's desirable that if one goes bad that it happens during the spa's warranty period. In such cases, the dealer should then be responsible for replacing the bad board. This usually only happens in the first year of ownership of a new tub.

When it goes bad with age, an owner will have to source a replacement one either from a spa dealer or hot tub replacement parts supplier. Both are available either regionally or online. In either case, it is important the owner has the exact information on the type of spa model owned, as well as the type of circuit board involved. This board information is usually printed on the circuit board itself. With this data a dealer or supplier can then source the exact part for replacement.

Unit ones are not hard to remove and install, but care needs to be taken when doing so. The order of the wiring and the connections are critical for correct operation. Unfortunately, the unit owner's manual is not going to provide the necessary wiring schematics, so an owner doing a self-repair is well-advised to take a few digital photographs of the old board while it is hooked up before removing anything. These images can then be used as a correct guide for the spa replacement parts. Then again, a dealer can always be hired to do the repair with trained staff for an extra charge.
