Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.
Compression socks and compression stockings may be used to stimulate blood flow in the lower extremities, which may be affected by poor circulation due to edema caused by diabetes, or other medical conditions.
Edema is simply the clinical term for swelling and refers to an increased level of fluid under the skin, which may often be seen in the lower legs, around the ankles and feet. Edema may be due to sports injuries, hot weather, pregnancy, surgery, varicose veins, airplane travel, or sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Underlying medical conditions may also lead to edema.
Compression socks and compression stockings effectively reduce mild leg swelling; they should be worn during the day but taken off at night. Compression garments come in a variety of colors and styles; they are available for purchase over the counter or online. Compression products are measured in millimeters of mercury, or mmHg, the measurements range from mild compression to extra-firm compression.
Mild compression (8-15 mmHg) is recommended for the relief of tired, achy legs. This level of compression may also alleviate pain associated with mild varicose veins and help minimize minor swelling in the ankles and legs. Moderate compression (15-20 mmHg) is suggested for the relief of a variety of symptoms including mild to moderate leg swelling, tired, aching legs, and mild leg pain. Firm compression (20-30 mmHg) may be used to address a number of disorders such as moderate swelling or edema and mild to moderate leg pain. It may also be used to prevent the reoccurrence of venous ulcers in the legs. Extra firm compression (30-40 mmHg) may be used to treat severe circulatory disorders of the legs including severe swelling or edema and relief of chronic leg fatigue and heaviness. Candidates, especially those with diabetes, should consult their doctors before trying compression socks or stockings.
Diabetes is a condition that involves irregular blood sugar levels and insulin production. There are two kinds of diabetes: Type 1, which develops in childhood or young adulthood; and, Type 2, which develops in adulthood. High blood sugar levels, which are a common symptom of diabetes, may breakdown the integrity of blood vessels and nerves in the body. This may effect blood circulation, usually in the eyes, skin, and kidneys. Poor circulation may eventually trigger a decrease in the oxygenated blood cells that reach the skin. Diabetics are at risk for wounds and open ulcers in the lower legs and feet. Diabetics are also at risk of developing neuropathy, which is damage to the nerves.
Diabetes-induced circulation problems may be addressed by compression socks and compression stockings, since these products support leg veins, which raises oxygen levels in the blood and increases circulation to ulcers.
Compression products are an affordable solution for a number of medical ailments.
