Crestor is an oral cholesterol-lowering drug. It contains Rosuvastatin calcium as an active ingredient. It is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent. It acts by blocking the production of cholesterol in blood. It is used to lower total cholesterol level and bad cholesterol level or LDL. But it helps to increase the level of good cholesterol or HDL in the body. It is used in treatment of high cholesterol level in children above 10 years old and adults. If patients develop any unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, muscle weakness, fever or flu symptoms, and dark colored urine while using this drug, they should call doctor, as these may be symptoms of kidney problems.

Crestor could produce some less serious side effects such as weakness, dizziness, mild nausea, constipation, diarrhea, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, pain or burning while urinating and temporary effect on memory. They can subside with time but if any of them becomes persistent or chronic, patients should consult the doctor.

Use of Crestor could lead to breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue and ultimately kidney failure. Older people are more prone to side effects of this drug related to liver and kidney. It could cause urine problems such as foamy urine, change in frequency and amount of urine and dark colored urine. This medicine could also cause liver problems. If patients have any of symptoms of liver problem such as yellowing of skin, yellow eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, they should immediately call the doctor.

It could also cause allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or difficulty in breathing. Patients may also develop hives or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other serious side effects of Crestor include fever or flu symptoms, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, jaundice, chest pain or swelling in hands or feet.

Many studies have shown recently that use of Crestor could increase the risk of development type 2 diabetes. It generally affects patients older than 45 years of age but cases of Crestor diabetes has been also reported in Crestor users who are younger.
