Do You Need Sensitive Ear Earrings?

Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.

You might need to wear sensitive ear earrings and not even know it. For some people, allergies to some metals will eventually cause them severe reactions to even some hypoallergenic earrings. However, these same people most likely started to have warning symptoms years before but did not realize what was happening. Since many people get their ears pierced as children, they may think that the itching and discharge they experience during or after wearing earrings is a normal occurrence. Since earlobes often ooze a bit as they are healing from being pierced, this is a natural, if incorrect, assumption.

The most common metal allergy is to nickel. Chromate and cobalt also cause allergic reactions in many people, though they are not used as often as nickel and perhaps this is why more people are sensitive to nickel. Very few non-precious metal jewelry items are made purely of a single metal. Rather, nickel and other metals are often mixed with a base metal to form a compound that is less expensive than the pure metal would be and sometimes more durable, as well. This means that a person with a nickel sensitivity who enjoys wearing jewelry has many opportunities for exposure to the metal.

The more a person is exposed to a substance to which they are sensitive, the more likely their sensitivity will develop into a fully blown allergic condition. One's immune system is designed to fight off perceived threats. Each time a threat is repeated, the body remembers the previous time and the fighting efforts of the immune system are increased. For example, a person who gets stung by one bee may develop an allergy or he may not. However, if a person is stung by many bees, he almost certainly will develop a severe allergy to bee stings.

Not all who have metal allergies develop severe symptoms, but for those that do, it is a very unpleasant experience. If you begin to suffer from mild itching or redness after wearing earrings or other jewelry, or if the piercings in your ear lobes have a crusty discharge the day after wearing earrings, you are probably sensitive to certain metals. The easiest way to ensure this does not turn into a worse condition, of course, is to stop wearing metal jewelry. However, for many people that may not seem like the best option since people usually wear jewelry because they love it.

There are other ways to protect yourself from developing more severe symptoms. If a beloved pair of earrings has nickel or another metal to which you think you are sensitive, you can try coating the post or hook in something to keep the metal off your skin. Paraffin may do the trick, though it will have to be reapplied often. A thin coating of acrylic paint or hypoallergenic clear nail polish may also work. It might be possible to have the earrings plated with a precious metal by a jeweler, but this will probably be costly.

When it comes time to buy sensitive ear earrings, look for earrings with posts or hooks made from sterling silver, plastic, gold or stainless steel. This is the best way to avoid the nasty rashes, severe itching and painful swelling that may otherwise eventually occur from prolonged exposure to allergy-causing metals.
