Blepharitis: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.

Of all the diseases that plague the human eyes, some are quite unnoticeable and difficult to cure. There are, of course, others that are easily noticed and treated. Blepharitis is an ocular condition that inflames the eyelids; it is an inflammation of the eyelash follicles. It also causes some degree of eye burning and dryness. At the initial stage, it tends to be very severe and acute, but in most cases, it disappears of its own accord and without treatment within 2 to 4 weeks. The severity of Blepharitis varies in individuals. There are different types of Blepharitis. It can be staphylococcal, mixed, seborrhoeic, posterior or parasitic. However, when this disease strikes, there are some very simple treatments that can be used to reduce its effects and eventually treat it. However, in cases where there is no improvement for some time while these treatments are administered, the best thing to do would be to seek the services of a doctor.

Causes

There are some substances that support whatever we do in our body. We can control these substances easily when they are injected from outside the body. But when they are substances that the body produces itself, it becomes very difficult. Blepharitis is caused by the malfunctioning of the oil glands in the eyelids. There are numerous oil glands in the eyelid, producing the oils needed by the eyelids. When these glands produce either too much, too little, or the wrong kind of oils, then the eyelids become inflamed at the margin, and this causes irritation and itching. The oil glands are also attacked by a disease called Acne rosacea. This also leads to Blepharitis. There are some that are caused by disorders in the lid margin and some by the staphylococcus brand of bacteria. There are also some environmental allergies that can lead to this, especially when they come into direct contact with the eye lids. Some chemicals, animals, and even liquids are involved here.

Symptoms

The sensitivity and visibility of the eyes makes the symptoms of this disease well noticed. It is not one of the body parts in which the disease becomes too severe before you begin to notice it. The numerous symptoms that are associated with the Blepharitis disease include, redness of the eye, the formation of cysts, some debris accumulating in the tear film, a gritty sensation of the eye, the skin of the eye lids becoming flaked, reduced vision and clarity, and some degree of eye dryness. These are some of the simple symptoms, but in cases that are sever or acute, advanced symptoms like redness and swelling can occur. In some cases, patients might experience serious sensitivity to light or the eyelashes growing abnormally or even failing off.

Treatment

The treatment of this disease is mainly by the use of a clean cloth to apply warm damp compression. This hinges on the fact that it is only medical hygiene that can see this disease treated completely. But in most cases, you can also make use of some baby shampoo for this. This will loosen the oil in the eye lids. You also need to seek the help of a medical doctor who in most cases will prescribe the best antibiotics for you. If the disease becomes more severe, corticosteroids may be applied.
