Chocolate Lab Allergies

Chocolate Lab allergies are more common than people think. Our chocolate Lab was a 6 week old puppy when he came to live with us. We first realized that he might have allergies about a week or two after he got home. We noticed that he was starting to lick his feet and scratch around his neck and ears more frequently. After a consultation with our veterinarian it was determined that he probably had a food allergy. We changed his food several times before we found the right brand and combination of ingredients to help control the itching.

We also noticed that when we took him fishing at the river with us that the scratching and foot licking would start again the day after we went fishing. It became obvious to us that he was also allergic to one or more of the plants that grow around the river. After another consultation with the vet, he recommended giving our Lab a dose of Benadryl before we took him to the river. We also wash his feet real good when we get home and it seems to control the allergies most of the time. The vet explained that dog allergies are a lot like human allergies and dogs can and will react to certain types of weeds, foods or things in the air.

Some of the symptoms we look for are:

- An increase in scratching, biting or licking his paws
- Excessive digging at his ears or the side of his face
- Swelling on his face
- Hives or a rash around his groin area
-Vomiting and/or diarrhea

Some of the preventative measures our veterinarian suggested are:

- Giving a small dose of an antihistamine (we use Benadryl) before going into weeded areas
- Thoroughly washing his feet and face after going into weeded areas
- Cleaning the inside of his ears daily

We've learned that even though we can't cure our Chocolate Lab's allergies, we can take steps to help prevent an outbreak and minimize his discomfort. Our furry friend is now 8 years old and going strong.
