Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.

This is one of the popular therapies in the world during the modern era. Even though the benefits which have been stated with the help of this therapy are not yet fully proven, many medical practitioners and lay people make use of this therapy for the purpose of curing the diseases.

This should be noted that in the word Apitherapy, Apis means the honey bee in Latin language. In this type of therapy, actual honeybee venom and few byproducts from honeybee are used. Apart from the honeybee venom the byproducts from the honeybee are bee pollen, raw honey, royal jelly and propolis or bee glue. The bee venom and these products are considered of having medicinal properties which are useful in various diseases like that in case of arthritis and other chronic pains, multiple sclerosis and even in cancer but not all results are medically proven.

History

It is also considered that the apitherapy was practiced in ancient Egypt, Greece and even in China. It is also said that Greek physician Hippocrates had also used this therapy in joints pain. Austrian physician Phillip Terc and beekeeper Charles Mraz of Middlebury are considered to be the people behind popularity of the Apitherapy for their work in field of its practice.

Line of Action and Effects

It is said that all the products mentioned above work in different ways in case are used in various ailments and conditions.

Honeybee venom: It is very important with its therapeutic value. Some conditions in the body like those of arthritic in nature are considered of producing toxic elements in the body when are present in the body for the long period of time. In those cases to nullify the effect of this toxicity; administration of substances like bee venom are considered in the field of traditional medicines. Chemically it contains substances like adolapin and melittin which are considered as highly powerful anti-inflammatory agents when administered in small quantity. It is considered that they produce natural steroid like cortisol which also acts as anti-inflammatory agent. Hence honeybee venom is administered in cases of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis and bursitis and in various other conditions involving inflammation.

Bee pollens: They are considered of having the effect of slowing down the aging process. It is also considered of containing necessary vitamins, minerals and proteins. It is considered that these pollens are useful as performance enhancers for athletes. Some followers of Apitherapy consider that bee pollens are quite useful in case of seasonal allergies as administration of this pollens in small amount helps in building the resistance for seasonal allergies as these pollens are one of the reasons for the same. It has been notified through the research that pollens do not contain vitamins and proteins etc more than many food products. The claims of slowing down the aging process and of performance enhancing are also not yet proven scientifically though widely accepted.

Raw honey: It is a quick source of energy (like sugar) and a natural storehouse of B vitamins and various minerals. It has mild antibacterial and antibiotic properties, and it can help soothe sore throats, cough and common cold etc. Those who use it believe that raw honey is the one which has not been processed in any way, is more healthful than processed honey. In some studies, raw honey has been used to suppress bacterial growth, particularly in open wounds. It is also considered that honey should never be heated in any case as it turns toxic in nature due to it. Natural honey is the only sweet substance used even by diabetic people without any adverse effect.

Royal jelly: It is a milky white substance produced in the salivary glands of worker bees and is considered to be a food source for the queen bee. It is considered that this jelly dramatically extends the queen's life and enhances her fertility. There have been numerous claims about beneficial effects on a variety of medical problems of royal jelly, including fatigue, infertility, asthma, and lack of appetite. These are mainly unreliable and not substantiated in clinical testing. Interestingly, however, animal and human studies have shown that royal jelly contains ingredients capable of lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. Based on its effect on the queen bee, royal jelly occasionally appears as an ingredient in cosmetics for women, especially anti-wrinkle creams. However, there is no evidence that royal jelly retards aging (or aging skin) in anyone except bees.

Propolis sometimes called as bee glue: It is a sticky resin that seeps from the buds of certain trees (the bees prefer poplar) and oozes from the bark of others (chiefly conifers). Worker bees collect it, add their salivary secretions to it and use it to coat the inside of the hive hence become like a natural wax. Propolis has been shown to contain antibacterial compounds and can be effective as a salve for cuts and bruises. It is also a source of flavonoids; potent antioxidants that can help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals.

This is the way by which the products from honeybee work in case of various ailments and conditions. Though all the considered benefits are yet to be confirmed by the scientific way, apitherapy is widely used alternative therapy in some parts of the world.
