Allergy Free Earrings: A Sensible Choice

Hello visitor! Thank you for taking the time to read this article.

Women have worn earrings since the beginning of recorded history. Archeological remains from the ancient Nubian empire have recorded hundreds of earrings buried with their former owners. Roman jewelers imported precious gold and jewels from the furthest mines of their empire in order to create beautiful earrings for dowagers and matriarchs. Queen Elizabeth I had a favorite pair of pearl earrings that she wore in every one of her state portraits. The rise of film stars and celebrities in the twentieth century with pierced ears increased the popularity of the trend. Now, over sixty percent of women have at least one piercing in each ear. Many women have multiple piercings. There are several dozen different metals and materials that can be used for crafting earrings, including allergy free earrings.

Despite the popularity of pierced ears, many women fail to realize the health problems that can arise from wearing the incorrect pair of earrings. Cheaper earrings are often coated with nickel. That great pair of bargain earrings that you picked up from a teen jeweler may provide great savings for your wallet, but in the long run, they could be much worse for your ears. Regular exposure to nickel coated earrings can result in the earlobe developing dermatitis. Scientific studies have proven that five to ten percent of American women have a natural sensitivity to nickel; which means that the wearing of nickel coated earrings could lead to the development of skin disease. If cheap earrings are purchased and skin dermatitis does develop, there are several solutions to treat the problem. One percent hydro cortisone cream can be applied to the affected area, twice daily; and can be purchased from a local pharmacist. If the dermatitis symptoms do not abate after a week, then it is recommended that your local doctor refer you to a dermatological specialist. Of course, all of these problems can be resolved through the purchase of allergy free earrings.

Many jewelry manufacturers today create earrings from hypoallergenic metals. Good quality earrings, made from high-end materials such as gold or platinum, are non-reactive and are perfect for sensitive ears. Although these earrings are usually more expensive, the increasing market saturation of the product means that prices are lowering as time goes by. The resistance to corrosion means that the quality and luster of the metal will never diminish; the earring will remain as sparkling as the day it was bought. Earrings made from surgical steel are also increasing in popularity. Surgical steel is one of the many variants of stainless steel, a composite created from molybdenum, chromium and nickel. Stainless steel is both incredibly hard (since it is used for surgical knives), the coating lends the surface a silvered, polished appearance and the chromium allows the metal to resist scratches and corrosion. These hypo-allergenic earrings are also extremely easy to sterilize. Simply remove the earrings from the ears and immerse them in a bath of saline solution - otherwise known as contact lens solution. Leave the earrings immersed for fifteen minutes, then remove from the bath and place on a paper towel to dry naturally. Wipe off any residue with another paper tower before inserting them into the ears.
